The most popular baby names in each Scottish council area have been revealed.

On Thursday, the National Records of Scotland posted its annual report of the most common baby names in Scotland. As reported by the Daily Record, Noah and Olivia were the most popular boys’ and girls’ names in 2024, replacing Luca and Isla respectively from the previous year.

The National Records of Scotland also shared which names came out on top for each area of the country. Olivia was the most or joint most common girls’ name in five of Scotland’s council areas, while Noah was the most or joint most common boys’ name in nine areas.

Looking at Edinburgh, the experts found that Leo was the top boys’ name. On the other hand, Sophia topped the list of girls’ names in the Scottish capital.

Over in Glasgow, Muhammad came out on top for boys’ names in 2024. Meanwhile, the top girls’ name in Scotland’s biggest city was found to be Olivia.

Elsewhere, in Stirling, Oliver was the number one boys’ name last year according to the National Records of Scotland. Evie ranked number one for girls in the city.

Looking at the the Western Isles, Alexander, Calum, and Luke all placed first for boys’ names. Orla, meanwhile, topped the list for girls.

Only two of Scotland’s council areas, Falkirk and South Lanarkshire, had both country-wide picks Noah and Olivia as their number one names. Meanwhile, the Shetland Islands had no girls names used three or more times in 2024, following a similar pattern to recent years.

The National Records of Scotland also revealed that the number of different names given to boys has been increasing year-to-year, reaching a new all-time high in 2024. The same pattern was seen for girls’ names, with the variety of names given to girls remaining significantly higher than that of boys.
