Independent picture Anora won big at the Oscars on Sunday, taking home five awards, including best picture and best actress for star Mikey Madison.
This marks 25-year-old Madison’s first Academy Award nomination and win. “This is very surreal,” she said in her acceptance speech. “Thank you to my incredible family: my mom and my dad, and my sister and my little brother, and my twin brother Miles – thank you for being my best friend.” Her win saw her beat out awards favourites Demi Moore in The Substance, and Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres in I’m Still Here.
In Anora, Madison plays a sex worker from Brooklyn who meets and marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
She also paid tribute to the community she had represented in the film. “I also just want to also recognise and honour the sex worker community,” she said in her Oscars speech. “I will continue to support and be an ally.”
