Hi can I have a private post please ? I am starting my first primary teaching job next week in year 1 , and I’m incredibly concerned that I’ve been informed by the head teacher I’m not to let them go to the toilet in class time , only at playtimes. Is this the norm ?

  1. In all my many years of teaching……you cannot leave the classroom. You do have to train your body and be wsrned there is often too few toilets for all tbe staff, to use them at same time and mainly female at this age. I have had a headteacher standing outside a cubicle with a trainee teacher she wanted me to meet because we were only allowed a minute, and she wanted to speak to.me!!!
You will begin to work.out how many drinks are your limit to comfortably cope during ghe day…I am pretty sure we were all de hydrated but just got on with it!!!.

  2. I think year 1 is a little young for them to wait so long I understand the older children to try and wait until break times and lunchtimes even then if they really need it I let them go! As it’s better than them having an accident.
