It seems that the official advice on when a baby should sit, differs a lot between countries so here’s my point of view as a pediatric Physical Therapist in Northern Europe. Here in Denmark, the best practice recommendation to parents is to wait with placing their baby in the sitting position, until the baby is able to get from lying to sitting independently. The sitting milestone is therefore set to be reached around the same time as crawling. In other countries it’s very common and even advised to practice sitting from 5-6 months in order to reach the sitting milestone much earlier. For me, with my in depth knowledge on motor development, I believe that the sitting milestone shouldn’t be forced. Sitting is a more passive position than active floor play. A baby is evolutionarily programmed to reach milestones on their own in a certain order so it’s not necessary to force the sitting milestone. As you know, I am all for supporting motor development through play and daily exercises but I would always do so in the previous or current milestone in order to reach the next. I don’t believe in skipping milestones and thereby disturbing the natural build of the motor foundation. In my experience, babies sit with a straight and strong back and are more likely to crawl when they get to go through all the motor milestones before sitting. Also, I see quite a lot of babies who bum scoot instead of crawl that have been sitting early on. It makes sense that it’s easier to crack the code to bum scooting from the sitting position. ❗️Sitting in a high chair for eating is completely fine, as the most important thing here is to prevent mis-swallowing and create a space for sensory perception and food enjoyment❗️ So, be patient. Give it time! Your baby will sit up and will sit stronger if you wait. I’m very curious to hear your point of view, so please let me know in comments if and why you disagree.
