Heatwave incoming… And whenever the weather gets warm I often get lots of questions about keeping babies hydrated. Here’s a quick fire guide for reference (and I cover more advice like this in my book!) ☀️ Exclusively breastfed babies under 6 months – continue to responsively breastfeed your baby. It’s likely they will feed more often for hydration. No extra water is needed. Mum- keep yourself hydrated!! ☀️ formula fed – prioritise your babies normal feeds (some bubs may take a little more). Under 6 months of age a small amount of cooled boiled water can be offered eg after feeds if needed ☀️ Combination fed – offer more breastfeeds if able to, otherwise follow advice above. 🥄 6 months + – offer tap water (in the UK) with meals and extra sips during the day as needed. Prioritise fluid rich foods eg watermelon, tomato, cucumber, pepper, yoghurt, cold milky cereals Signs of dehydration in babies and young children – reduced wet nappies – darker and smellier urine – lethargy – irritability – sunken fontabelle (soft spot) – lack of tears when crying – constipation As always, any questions please shout below #babyhydration #hydration #water #kidsfeeding #babyfeedingtips #breastfeeding #formulafeeding #heatwave
