Can I have a pp please
My 12 year old brother called me yesterday and told me he is gay. I had an indepth conversation with him about it and from what he said it doesn’t seem like a phase as he said he’s known for around 2 years. I always knew myself as there’s alot of tell tale signs, please I don’t need people telling me otherwise as I’ve already discussed this with him and explained if he grows up and doesn’t feel that way anymore then that’s ok to. He had zero judgement from me and I was very supportive. Basically the reason I am posting is because only myself and his head of year know, he hasn’t told our dad or mum or any other family members. I have told him if and when he feels ready I will be with him should he choose to which he said he was relieved and he also said he’s been losing sleep for weeks building up the courage to tell me, now he’s glad he told me as I’ve showed him full support and no judgement. Am I doing the right thing by not telling our parents or other family? As I feel that’s his place to tell them not mine. I am very close with my little brother I felt so sad that he was so anxious about telling me. Also does anyone have any suggestions on how to support him through this? I’m bisexual myself but it’s changed days now from when I came out many years ago. Thank you

  1. You did good, sis! You are being a sister your brother can count on. It’s for him to tell your parents when he’s ready. Maybe I would explore with him why he feels he can’t share with his parents and work through that.

  2. You’re a good sister. No you’re not wrong for not telling your family as it’s not your news to tell. It’s a big thing for him to come out. He must feel safe and supportive with telling you first before parents. Just be there for him when he does

  3. The question is why is he needing support? Liking men, women or both is natural and it’s so much more common these days at the age of 12 these days he shouldn’t need to be worrying about his feelings and how others think of what he thinks.
He can like he can experiment along as he’s safe there’s no reason he shouldn’t be open.

  4. You are right to respect his wishes and not tell them. It’s hard enough for preteens to navigate emotional hurdles without having to share with everyone sooner than they would wish. Im sure he just want space and time to be able to tell people when he is ready.

  5. If he tells your parents and they ask why you didn’t say you say that you are Keeping your brother’s trust , you want his trust and you are very close to him and it wasn’t your place to say , well done you sound likema lovely sibling
