My daughter is 11. She loves animals and has started making masks mainly animal ones. I am happy she is creative but she started saying the word therian. Her friend is into all these terms and is a supporter of the LGBQ which is where she is getting this stuff from. My daughter isn’t familiar with these things and I’m not sure I want her calling herself a Therian. I also notice her sometimes pretending to be an animal etc. I’m all for kids being kids but I’m not a fan of this type of stuff. Any advice.

  1. My daughter 15 at the time went thru the same thing. She educated me on a lot of it.
She believed she was bi sexual because the people she was hanging out with where part of the LGBTQ community.
I told her that was fine but she wasn’t to act on anything until she was 18 as i believed she was confused and easily lead but would always support her in what ever path she took
She agreed and now 20 and is grateful that i allowed her to express herself but happy that she didn’t engage with anyone as she definitely is not bi sexual
Educate urself before taking to ur daughter.

  2. My daughter and her friends went through a stage last year of making masks and stating they are therians. Personally I didn’t draw attention to it. If she wanted to craft and make masks that’s ok with me. I also discussed with her that there are situations where it is not appropriate. They on and off would ‘act’ like animals, but eventually they have stopped. Personally if they want to play, they are still young. It has become a more talked about things so of course children are going to become more curious.

  3. Not the same situation exactly but my daughter was very confused when she went to high school with 1300 pupils(her primary school was very small) & there are kids who are part of the LGBTQ community(not in a hateful way) just confused so I explained to her what that means. She understood when I explained to her and I think she appreciated that so I would have a conversation with your daughter and explain so she’s hearing it from you x

  4. I used to pretend to be a cat. I was born a woman, i know im a woman, you can refer to me as she/her….. it never confused me acting like a cat and gettin people to call me a cat.
Teach her about lgbq as thats the world we live in nowadays but the animal play,, I wouldn’t stress

  5. I think it’s more important that your daughter gets educated by you in these situations as opposed to other 11 year olds. She probably doesn’t really know what Therian is so it’s important to educate her in a non judgemental way. She’s thinking like an 11 year old because she’s 11. It’s not just about the word Therian but it’s about the LGBTQ community too. LGBTQ isn’t really anything to do with the “Therian community”, sometimes they can cross paths though. So if you’re not a hateful homophobic person, I think you can sit down with your child and talk about this stuff and make sure she understands it from an adult. If you’re anti LGBTQ and homophobic, you can ask someone who isn’t hateful to educate your daughter instead.

  6. My daughter tried asking for a cat tail about a year ago and was using this word sorry but I 100℅ nipped that straight away! She was only 9 at the time and I was like absolutely not, and not because of the lgbq, just because it sounded too sexual to me and i didn’t like it at all! She’s not interested in any of that anymore now.
