My baby girl is 6 months old and I’ve been thinking about getting her ears pierced. I had mine done as a baby and, to me, it’s always just been a normal thing. My mum says she had hers done young because babies don’t tend to fiddle with them as much, and I’ve never had any issues with mine.

But after mentioning it to a few other mums, I’ve been made to feel like I’m doing something awful. One mum said that babies can’t consent and that I should wait until she’s old enough to decide for herself. Another said it’s no different from cutting a baby’s hair or choosing their clothes, and that parents make decisions about their children’s appearance all the time.

Now I’m completely torn.

Part of me thinks, they’re only tiny earrings and it’s something I personally think looks lovely on little girls. But another part of me wonders whether I should just leave her ears alone and let her make that decision herself when she’s older.

I genuinely want honest opinions, even if you disagree with me.

Would you pierce your baby’s ears, or would you wait until they’re old enough to ask for it themselves? And what age do you think is actually appropriate? 👂
