Hello, can I please stay anonymous? I can’t bear what I’m about to post. My son, who’s 8 years old, has HSV-1, the Herpes Simplex Virus, not yet medically confirmed, but we have just realized what it is and that he may have caught it three years ago, and we simply haven’t known. Growing up, people who had cold sores were just that: it was a mild inconvenience and something that went away with treatment. I never knew that it was a virus that, once contracted, stays with you for life. I feel so stupid that I never knew and that I somehow didn’t protect my boy better. He contracted it at creche; it’s very evident from chats I had with the school at that time… I didn’t think anything of it, just treated him, got him better, and moved along. Now, years later, due to something else, I googled it and I am absolutely gutted, freaking out, feeling like I failed him. I know the facts,I know that many children contract it as it is so contagious and spread by normal day-to-day activity but I can’t seem to get over it. I’m losing sleep, and I worry that it will affect his future relationships. Has anyone experienced this? Am I overreacting over cold sores?! He hasn’t had an outbreak since it first happened, but cold sores are the result of the virus. So we already know in a sense. I don’t even know what I’m doing here; I’m just so emotional and distraught.
I feel horrible…I’ve done everything to protect him as best as I can and he still contracted this. How do I navigate this.

  1. My daughter gets them, it used to really annoy me when she was younger because she always picks up a bug and she gets them mainly when she’s run down shes 9 and she now knows her signs of when she’s getting one (the area where she usually gwts them starts to itch/tingle) so we are able to treat it before it gets bad, we started using LIPIVIR you can get it off Amazon and honestly after the second time using it she hasn’t had one since, also recommend the compeed cold sore patches and using it with a cream

  2. I had no idea that even had it until a coldsore appeared on my top lip a couple of days after my dad died unexpectedly in 2022, when I was 49. I got another after his funeral, and another when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Always in the same spot, and I’ve never had another since. They seem to only have popped up when I was under extreme stress. Please don’t worry about a virus most people develop during their lifetime and can pick up anywhere.

  3. I would say if he hasn’t had a outbreak in a while, I would say he’s healthy, cold sores usually hit wen run down or ill or stressed, and yes unfortunately it will always be carried by him but it’s manageable and treatable, and just good hygiene will help, I suffer with them, but only if I’m run down or ill x

  4. I used to take a cold sore every month when I had my period always on my top lip just below my nose. Also I get them from too much sun. I have been prescribed Aciclovir tablets. As soon as as I feel a tingle I take a tablet straight away. I still get a sore but not nearly as bad as it used to be
