I’d really like to hear other parents’ opinions on something that happened at school yesterday, because I’m honestly quite upset and unsure how I should feel about it.

My son is only 6. Yesterday, another child had her toy taken, and my son tried to help her get it back. Another child then threatened to “kill” the girl.

My son told the girl to “run so you don’t get hurt” because he was trying to protect her.

The other child then turned to my son and said, “OK then, I’m going to kill you instead,” and then hit him across the head with a bat.

My son told me that it really hurt and that he went and sat down crying because he was in so much pain.

I completely understand that they are only 6 and that children this age are still learning about emotions, conflict, boundaries and consequences. I’m not expecting a six-year-old to have the understanding of an adult, and I’m not looking to name or shame another child.

But as a mum, I’m struggling with this. My son wasn’t looking for a fight. From what he has told me, he was trying to help another child, told her to run so she wouldn’t get hurt, and then ended up being threatened himself before being hit across the head with a bat.

I know children can say things without fully understanding the meaning behind them, and I know they can act impulsively. But when you hear your 6-year-old tell you that another child said they were going to kill them and then hit them with a bat, it’s really difficult not to be concerned.

If this happened to your 6-year-old, how would you feel? Would you expect the school to treat it as a normal disagreement between young children, or would you expect it to be taken more seriously because there was a threat followed by physical violence with a bat?

I’d really appreciate some honest opinions, especially from parents who have experienced something similar.

  1. where did they even get a bat from? was it P.E or something? I had something similar in they had left a note on their desk with a knife, blood and a very obvious throat being slit open…the head teacher said..its a lovers tiff…i eventually started to home educate my two cos that school was ridiculous..not that im saying thats an option for you or anything but I don’t think just cos they are 6 is a reason to ignore this.

  2. Mum of two boys here and my first thought that came into my head is all the games children play online , Roblox , Minecraft !!! Flee the facility game where your the beast and you run after the others with a bat and bash them on the head and drag them into a tube until they get freed !!! The term IL kill “you” really needs looking into at the school , don’t think I’ve ever heard young children use that phrase, and I would take it further , hope the school can talk the parents about what was said , hope he’s ok and not too upset and things get resolved x

  3. As upsetting as it is for you, I would imagine things like this happen more often than you think. The 6 year old probably doesn’t understand that it was a “threat followed by physical violence” I would focus on explaining to your son that he did the right thing but sometimes people do the wrong things

  4. i would definately go to the school and say you want it dealt with. did the other child happen to have the bat close or did he seek it out? if he went to seek it out thats scary but if it was just close by i doubt there was murderous intent as in if there was a shoe nearby he wouldve hit him with that (not saying hitting any child is right btw)
