Hi please post anonymously
I have a two year old son who attends nursery. Today I’ve walked into him holding his bag and drink whilst trying to put his shoes on stood up getting in a state as he can’t quite figure it out. he’s by himself with three staff nearby – not helping. He’s then seen me come over and had a massive breakdown crying then had an accident. I take him to the bathroom all distraught to change him. The toilets are filthy there’s water or pee on the floor which then he stands in – further tears. I open his bag to find more wet clothes so further accidents when he’s been doing so well. They can’t tell me how much lunch he’s had and the first time I took him potty there the toilets were disgusting again and had pee filled pottys. Am I overthinking this scenario? I just feel without his key worker he’s just left to own devices and the comment I get back is they’re making them independent – whereas I think he’s only 2!

  1. No no no . Firstly at 2 they should be gently encouraging him to put his own shoes by assisting him . “ come on put your foot in then you can fasten the Velcro “ lots of praise for trying but you wouldn’t expect a 2 year old to be able to do it on their own . Secondly the bathroom is a health and safety hazard . If my 2 year old grandson went in he would probably tip a wee filled potty out . That’s disgusting and lazy they should be cleaning the potties after every use and wiping the floor if someone misses . Complain to manger

  2. My child would be removed from that nursery and I would be reporting it. If you do, do it all in writing. I’m a student nursery practitioner and all of that goes against everything we’re taught and violates human rights of the child 🥹 poor wee boy hope your okay too ❤️

  3. It doesn’t sound like your son is thriving in this environment. I’d take him out immediately. Independence especially for little boys should be done in small steps. It sounds like your son is very unhappy when he’s trying to go home before you get there.

  4. I work in a nursery and this made me really sad, if a child is crying they are not meant to be left to their own devices …2 year olds learning to be independent would be him happily finding his lunchbox and everyone cheering after him doing it…. He isn’t going to learn positively in this way, in terms of pottys all pottys should be emptied and cleaned after each use so clearly that isn’t happening so Id be questioning if staffing is an issue also. I’m so sorry he’s been through this and events like this make families lose trust in the system ❤️ I can promise you not all nurseries are like this ❤️ and adult should have worked out the root of the meltdown and calmed him before he even had shoes or held his bag…he needed a cuddle or some support xxxxx 2 year olds are still too young in my eyes to be telling parents they need independence, independent yes in finding their drink or finding their things but we don’t expext 2 year olds to put their shoes on alone ever ❤️

  5. I would be speaking to the manager At the end of the day ur child should feel safe and secure in the environment they are in, dirty toilets is unacceptable and tbh if this is an open toilet area u shouldn’t be allowed in there for safeguarding reasons as children could be having nappy changes or being toilet trained.

  6. From experience of working in nursery’s, toilets should not be in that state as staff should be supervising them when they go and making sure they are clean after. No potty should be left with wee in or pee on the floor!
Also they should be encouraging him to sit down and have free hands to put his shoes on and supporting this!
I as an adult can’t balance and put my shoes on with things in my hands!
