Hi could I get a PP please
My 14yr old had her yearly eye test on Monday, she has myopia so her prescription is quite strong, She wears glasses all the time. We did the imaging etc, when we went into the room with the optician he said he needed to make an urgent referral to hospital because the back of 1 eye and the optic nerve is swollen, he also did her eye check an her prescription has jumped from -2.4 to -5.6 in 2 years he said was quite a drastic jump in that eye. They then did OCT imaging on that eye to confirm is was 100% swelling, They didn’t explain why she needed the urgent appointment or what’s could be causing it. The hospital has been pretty quick and she has an appointment at the eye clinic..anyone else had this with their child as mine is worried too.

Try to find Fb support group for eye problems you have much higher chance to get help .
Not child but me could be a 100 reason I was literally blind in my right eye and I hadn’t even realised. I would just keep reassuring them atleast we are getting it checked
I had swelling and was IIH which was made worse by been on hormone based birth control thinking at 14 maybe her hormones are changing? I went to a eye hospital they ruled out was an “eye” issue so then went to normal hospital for CT scans and then lumbar which wasn’t nice but also give me a reason all happened within 5 day.
Look up Optic Neuritis, inflammation of the optic nerve.
It was the first sign of MS in my daughter at 19.
She’s fine and sees fine now. The eye doctor also sent us off to the hospital with a letter immediately after an eye exam.
The hospital gave her six days of a cortisone IV. The inflammation went away and she fully recovered her pre inflammatory vision.
As optic neuritis is one of the very first signs of MS they did a full brain, chest and spine MRI with and without contrast and confirmed it was MS.
She now receives a treatment every six weeks of a DMT = Disease Modifying Treatment.
She’s doing well and has an annual check up and MRI. She’s 23 now. Unless she told you you would not notice anything.
Thanks to the MRI machine it can now be diagnosed much earlier than in the past.
I don’t write this to scare you but after my daughters diagnosis I have read so many doctors and patients write about how they ignored Optic Nerve issues years ago only to wake up with some other debilitating illness years later.
If it is something worse best to treat it earlier rather than later.
Best wishes
