Hello. Can I have a pp please?

My parents had my 4 year old lb for a night a couple of weeks ago. When I went to collect him they told me that they had lost him the day before in a really busy place. My lb ran a bit too far ahead and before they knew it he was gone from sight. My mum laughed it off saying he wasn’t gone long and that they found him with a young couple who noticed he looked lost and upset. My mum did say they were panicked but kept making out like it wasn’t a big deal and laughing. I was so angry when she told me. Angry that they didn’t tell me straight away, angry that they could let it happen. I’m very grateful to the couple who helped my son but at the same time they could have been anyone. Somebody else could have found him first, somebody not as kind. It’s truly my biggest fear. I got lost when I was about 7 and the feeling still haunts me. I am a paranoid wreck if I lose sight in a shop etc. I can’t get it out of my head. I keep playing out scenarios in my head over and over. I’m a worrier and overthinker at the best of times but since this I just can’t bare what might have been. I told mum at the time that she wouldn’t have my son to stay over again because I just can’t trust my parents with him anymore. I guess I’m just looking to rant but also am I completely overreacting? Thanks

  1. Your right to feel angry and they should have been honest right away but as for saying how could they let it happen they are human and no parent or grandparent is perfect have a good talk to them about it and let them know it’s not ok they hid it from you as for playing things over and over in your head that didn’t happen that’s no good for you as an over thinker myself I do understand but you need to really work hard on not letting that happen you will drive yourself crazy

  2. Your emotions and feelings are completely valid. It’s a different type of love & fear when you have your own child and not wanting anything to happen. Your mom should have told you as soon as it happened, then maybe then it would have been different, but because she told you the next day and laughed it off of course you’re in your right to feel this way especially when you got lost yourself x

  3. Not overreacting at all id of been horrified ! I get the no harm done thing that they are trying to laugh it off at the time your parents were prob pretty scared too but perhaps didn’t want to tell you while you were away and ruin your time away x

  4. I’d give them an attachment for walks next time …u know those wrist bands. It happens but your feelings completely valid. I don’t think it’s worth going to extreme and cutting contact but I do think a good conversation on what you need from them if they want to have him again is needed. If they’re anything like you’ve mentioned making it not a big deal they may be offended but that’s not you’re problem of priority x
