the best piece of newborn advice🄹 especially in a generation of hands-on dads! doing my best to push aside the alarms going off in my mind and the sense of urgency to soothe my baby so that dad can thrive with her & it has been worth every second (more below on what a crying baby does to mom’s brain and body) now obviously this doesn’t apply to EVERY scenario. there are some days that babygirl is craazzzzyyy fussy and I have to take her from dad to calm her down because we both just need a moment of peacešŸ˜‚ There are also days she prefers one of us to the other. There are limits to this. But on regular days, i’ve been intentional about not automatically grabbing her when she starts fussing & giving him a minute or two to figure out how to calm her and bond with her in his own way & it’s been amazing for us. i’m also learning that his way of soothing her does not have to be my way. there are things that work differently for both of usšŸ«¶šŸ¼ what a lot of people don’t understand is what happens in moms brain and body when her baby cries. our brains are wired to have a primal fight or flight response to charge into action (or sometimes the opposite) when we hear our babies cry. A mom stepping in to soothe her baby is not mom interfering or being selfish or trying to have control of her baby, it’s literally a natural instinct. To a lot of moms, a baby’s cries can sound like multiple alarm bells ringing in her head that she has to shut off – giving her anxiety and sending her into a state of panic. so it’s hard to listen to a baby cry for more than a few minutes because of the response that happens within mom. pushing that instinct aside for a moment and stepping away if need be has ultimately allowed dad & baby to become closer & for me to be able to have the mental breaks that I need thoughout my day #newborn #newbornbaby #newparents #girlmom #boymom #babycrying #momlife #dadlife #parenting #motherhood #babycry
