Here’s what you need to know about chest sleeping – no matter how careful you are, your baby might slip. It happens… and actually, it’s quite common. Which is why safe chestsleeping is made up of TWO components: ➊ Us! A sober, non-smoking, invested caregiver. The way I woke up just as N started to slide off my chest? Our intuition is powerful, and has evolved to help us take care of our babies even in our sleep 🥹✨ As Dr James McKenna put it, “Mothers are able to awaken quickly from sleep in response to what their infant is doing or not doing. They developed a level consciousness during sleep and a high degree of maternal, sleep related monitoring abilities.” (Mosko et al., 1997). It’s really remarkable! BUT! We absolutely cannot jeapardize this intuition by being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. ➋ A safe sleep environment. If your baby does roll off you, it’s crucial that every hazard is accounted for. A firm mattress with a tightly fighted sheet. Blankets no higher than your waist. You and baby lying in the middle of the mattress. This way, if your baby slips off your chest, they won’t fall to the ground or get wedged in a gap (which commonly happens when parents sleep with their babies on a sofa, recliner, etc.). If they’re going to fall, we need to make sure it’s to nothing but a firm, bare mattress. Trust your body to keep your baby safe on your chest. AND give yourself peace of mind by setting yourself up in a safe position before you fall asleep.
