Father of 2 Rescued from Capsized Boat Uninjured After Stranded for 5 Hours

A father of two was rescued off the coast of Australia’s Rottnest Island after being stranded for five hours.

According to The West Australian, Clayton Robinson was on his way back from a quick fishing trip on Friday, March 21, when he realized that his boat was beginning to be overturned by the water.

Before the boat went down, Robinson, 41, did all he could to get help, putting on his life jacket, sending his coordinates to a friend, grabbing EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) and emergency flares.

At about 6:00 p.m. local time, the Western Australia Police Force police received a report about a “vessel in distress, with a man reporting his vessel was taking on water, off the coast of Rottnest Island,” a press release states.

Police were also notified by the AMSA Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of an EPIRB activation near The Basin, off Rottnest Island.

At that point, a multiple-agency effort between the Western Australia Police Force police and other first responders, including the Fremantle Marine Rescue, Marine Rescue Cockburn, and Water Police and Police Air Wing began.

A video obtained by Australia’s Nine News and later shared by Marine Rescue Cockburn shows a marine rescue boat slowly approaching Robinson as he stands on top of what is left of his boat.

The Western Australia Police Force said Robinson was located by the Police Air Wing sitting on “the upturned hull of his vessel” at about 11:00 p.m.

“The man was wearing a life jacket and was uninjured. He was conveyed to shore by Fremantle Marine Rescue where he was reunited with his family,” the press release said.

In its own news release, Fremantle Marine Rescue said it did a “brief assessment of the man’s wellbeing,” before taking him to shore.

Robinson told 7NEWS Australia that he felt “joy and relief” after seeing the rescue boat approach.

“I’m like, ‘How they want me to do this?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m coming straight for that thing. It’s floating.’ My first words to the boys on the boat were, ‘Thank God we live in Australia,’ ” he told the news station.

Fremantle Marine Rescue said his rescue “highlights the importance of correct safety equipment and procedures.”

Echoing similar sentiments, the Western Australia Police Force said Robinson’s rescue is a “timely reminder” for those who go out in the water to “always wear a life jacket, and carry a registered and up to date EPIRB with GPS-enabled tracking to alert authorities to emergency situations.”
